With the bombshell news of Messi leaving Barcelona and going to PSG, Paris has become the team to beat this year. They now arguably have 3 of the best players in the world with Neymar, Mbappé, and now Messi in an offensive dream team.
Not only that, but Sergio Ramos has also joined and will add to a solid center-back duo with Marquinhos. Italian goalkeeper Donnarrumma, who had a terrific Euro Cup, has also joined and will give depth to their goalkeeping squad as they will have two quality GK's with Keylor Navas. Wijnaldum has also arrived adding to the depth of their midfield.
Having been bought by closed shareholder Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, PSG is one of the richest teams in the world and does not seem to have been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic like other teams such as Barcelona.
Having been runner-ups two years ago and gotten to the semi-finals of the Champions League last year, the addition of Messi will likely be the boost they need to get them over the edge and get PSG their first Champions League title.
Messi's adaptation should be quick as he is former teammates with Neymar and current national teammates with Di Maria and Paredes. Coach Pochettino is also a fellow compatriot.
We already know that Messi has chemistry with Neymar, as was proven in the years they played together at Barcelona, achieving several titles including a continental treble in the 2014-2015 season by wining the Copa del Rey, La Liga and the Champions League.
Their toughest competitors this year will be Chelsea and Manchester City the current Premier League and Champions League title holders who have recently signed two major players in Lukaku and Grealish respectively.
Nonetheless, the trio of Messi, Neymar & Mbappé will be tough to beat even with the tremendous quality and depth that both Chelsea and City have.
Who could have predicted that Messi would be playing with PSG at the start of the season? I guess in this COVID-19 era you should always expect the unexpected. It may be the COVID-19 era, or the post COVID-19 era. But one thing is certain, it is definitely the start of the PSG era.
